Using Powerpoint to teach.
PowerPoint is a great teaching tool; however, I think it is way overrated and overused. I-Car makes some excellent PowerPoint’s for us to use or you make spend hours making your own presentations. All the same, the presentations are great with outstanding information. However, some teachers are relying fully on the slideshow to teach their class. The problem is that the students are not retaining the information. I’m sure you have found your mind wondering during a presentation before. To solve this problem use the slideshow to supplement you, the teacher. Keep the students attention on you, not the overhead. Ask questions as you go through the presentation. When a student answers a question, expand on the question and make it a class discussion. Ask them why they think that and if others agree. Correct them if needed, but assure them there are no wrong answers. If the students say the information themselves they will believe and remember the information much better than if just the teacher is presenting the information as they go through the slideshow. This teaching method may take additional time to cover the information, but the student involvement and interaction is a very powerful teaching method.
This tip helped me. I hope it helps someone else.

Cell Phone Policy
A co-instructor sent me this link concerning cell phones. You may want to show it to your students when going over your policy...

I thought you all may find this quick 4 minute video interesting. It's about student's vision today. I showed this to my students when we were discussing collaboration and they found the video very interesting. In fact, they know some of the students on the video, as they are from K-State. I hope you enjoy the video.
