Voice you opinion about REF03
Nov 7th, 2007 at 7:35am

Hello everyone. I am in the process of updating REF03. There will be a new flow to the program and a new module containing information on new clearcoats being used by the vehicle makers, waterborne basecoats, and UV cure products. In order to make room for this new module, something will have to be removed.

I have spoke to some instructors about removing one of the tinting methods, mapping being the one I would remove. I feel the color plotting method can be taught more generally, that is why I would keep this one. The instructors I have spoke to are in agreement with this.

If anybody would like to add their thoughts or comments, please post here or call me at the Tech Centre. 1-920-749-0444 x123. Thanks. Joel

I have instructed the REF 03 three times last fall and agree that the class material needs updating. The Metalics and pigmants all have changed and increased in solids. The plotting/ Mapping could be condensed in one technique, stressing that the purpose of all of this information is to be albe to see and forcast what the car is compared to the refinish, because that's the only thing we can change. I think Mapping does this best.
Each paint maker has specific toners that can be utilized to affect flop and chroma.
I would also like to see more information on color vision perception/deficiency, maybe a postcard type test.
There are so many things that affect the color standard, I would like to see more examples of it, as in how the different car manufactures have different application methods. How vehicle parts are manufactured in color from the part maker, or refinished by the part maker with a different type of finish.
There are videos that show the application process available from the vehicle makers that would be a good addition.
Updated information on recomended procedures for cleaning and preping plastic parts.
Blending solvents need to be in two seprate areas because there are blending solvents that are used as a "clear basecoat", Adhesion promtor, Color blender, Wet Bed, that are used in the aid of blending basecoat to help make a invisable transaction in the blend area and some, like the S-65 Sherwin Williams offers, is to be catalyzed.
Then there are the solvents that are used to reduce the overspray edge on a clearcoat blend, these are different solvents in each paint makers system.
Add  to the sealer section so as to reflect the new sealers that provide impact resistance to stone chips.
Condense portions of the single stage, basecoat, tri-coat applications so that the sealer operation can be done on the first process, it is the same for each.
Move the test panel preperation to the begining, before the refinish operation in the booth. All paint makers recommend preparing the test panel in day light or corect light before the refinish operation.
The program does not reflect the importance of doing sprayout panels/letdown panel in the trimout, or prior to putting the vehicle in the booth.
Just my .02$ worth. I hope this helps, I have gotten good responses from most of the material.
