Description

Maintains and updates computer systems, work stations, and servers. Researches repair procedures through manufacturer websites and other sources. Trains computer applications and new estimators.

 

Personal Characteristics and Skills

Must enjoy working with computers, numbers, and people. Requires working in an office environment, close attention to detail, and patience. Must be a team player, have good communication skills, and work well with people.

 

Job Outlook

Computers and computer systems are becoming an increasingly vital part of a collision repair business. As reliance on computers keeps increasing for sales, estimating, accounting, websites, and on-line research, this position becomes essential. With every business needing at least one person focused on computer systems, opportunities keep expanding.

 

Pre-Employment Education and Experience

Reading, math, and computer skills are essential. A high school education is required with post-secondary education a plus. Network, operating system, and data base certification is recommended. Experience with on-line research is important.

 

Earnings

Depending on the size of the business’ computer systems, earnings can be expected to start between $35,000 to $40,000 and increase according to experience and changing technologies.

 

Career Path

Advancement would include larger computer systems and larger businesses. Future positions could include new car dealerships or the insurance, manufacturer, and distributor industries. Another path could be software development for many of the industry suppliers. Many IT Specialists operate as independent consultants, managing computer systems in many different businesses.

 

Continuing Education

Technical schools and on-line programs can supply current technical information. Software vendors can supply specific information for particular programs, operating systems, or networks.
