Description
May order parts, check in received parts, deliver parts, and/or pick up parts from supplier stores. Also may be responsible for updating or maintaining computerized inventory system. This is an important aspect of keeping an efficient workflow and production volume moving through the shop. The right parts must be at the right place at the right time and all tracking systems must be kept up-to-date and accurate.
Personal Characteristics and Skills
Must enjoy working around cars and trucks, have good work ethics, and be comfortable working with details. Must have patience to track part numbers, invoices, and repair orders, usually with computer programs.
Job Outlook
As vehicle population and miles driven increase every year, the need for quality collision repair will always be here. Parts flow is an essential link in the repair process and must be efficient for production to proceed as planned. With the wide variety of vehicles and part variations available, this has become a critical position in medium to large collision repair operations.
Pre-Employment Education and Experience
Math, reading, and computer skills are necessary to understand and work with all the operations necessary in an efficient parts operation. A high school education is expected with post-secondary education a plus. Industry experience is preferred. A good understanding of vehicle construction and are helpful to communicate effectively with technicians and parts suppliers.
Earnings
As an entry-level position, earnings may be near minimum wage to start. Additional earnings are commensurate with experience and good overall performance.
Career Path
Advancement to parts management is a logical move in the collision repair business, but estimator and entry-level technician are also good possibilities. Outside the business, positions in dealership parts departments, outside parts stores, and warehouse operations are available.
Continuing Education
Training is available from vendors for inventory systems, computer applications, and details of part ordering and returns. Certification is available through ASE.
