Description
Works with both technicians and retail customers to look up and locate the right part. Uses books and computers to research part numbers and locations. Helps with inventory control, replenishes stock as needed, and provides price quotes. In a large new car dealership, this position may specialize with wholesale customers, including collision repair businesses.
Personal Characteristics and Skills
Must enjoy working around cars and trucks, solving problems on a regular basis, and be comfortable working with numbers and details. Must have patience to track part numbers, inventory, and repair orders, usually with computers.
Job Outlook
As vehicle population and miles driven increase every year, the need for automotive repair will always be here. Parts flow is an essential link in the repair process and must be efficient for production to proceed as planned. With the wide variety of vehicles and part variations available, this is a critical position in medium to large parts departments.
Pre-Employment Education and Experience
Math, reading, and business management skills are necessary to understand and manage all the operations necessary in an efficient parts operation. A high school education is expected with post-secondary education a plus. Industry experience is preferred. A good understanding of vehicle construction and are helpful to communicate effectively with technicians and retail customers.
Earnings
This can be an entry-level position with starting salaries in the $20,000 – 25,000 range, although an automotive background would command a higher starting salary.
Career Path
As an entry-level position, it could result from experience as a porter or delivery person. Depending on the size of department, there may be specializing into areas including wholesale, high-performance, or purchasing. This position can lead to a service writer position or to parts management. It could also lead to positions in an independent parts business or supplier distributorship.
Continuing Education
Training is available from the manufacturer or outside vendors for inventory systems, computer applications, and details of part ordering and returns. Certification is available through ASE.
