Collision Industry Job Descriptions: Service Writer

Description

Greets service customers, listens to needs, writes repair orders, estimates the cost and time needed for repairs, handles customer complaints, and follows up on work completed. Advises customer on work needed based on experience, vehicle inspection, and maintenance schedules. Works with service technician to make sure the right work gets done correctly and on time.

 

Personal Characteristics and Skills

Must enjoy working with people, working around cars and trucks, and be comfortable with selling service work. Must be able to communicate by phone and in person. Must have self-confidence, integrity, and good work ethics.

 

Job Outlook

As vehicle population and miles driven increase every year, the need for quality service repair and maintenance will always be here. Like other businesses, automotive service is subject to market conditions and technology advancements. A well-run business will succeed and grow, requiring good service writers to interact with customers.

 

Pre-Employment Education and Experience

Math, reading, and science skills are necessary to understand the many aspects of automotive service repair in a dealership service department. A high school education is required with post-secondary education recommended. Industry experience is preferred. A good understanding of the vehicle repair, maintenance, and warranty processes are necessary.

 

Earnings

Starting salaries may be in the $35,000 – 40,000 range, depending on business size and market conditions.

 

Career Path

An experienced technician is an ideal candidate by having extensive technical knowledge. This experience in customer service and sales can proceed to service manager, car sales, or an independent business ownership. This experience could lead to positions in the insurance, manufacturer, or distributor industries.

 

Continuing Education

Standard post-secondary business education is available through local or on-line colleges. Technical education is available through vehicle manufacturer programs. Specific automotive management education is available through the Automotive Management Institute (AMI) and can result in the Accredited Automotive Manager (AAM) designation.
