Description
Inspects, analyzes, and evaluates estimates of repair created by either an auto appraiser or repair facility for training purposes. Helps a department or local area to increase their consistency of claim settlements. Uses computers to review estimates and interact with other company computer software. Develops and executes plans for coaching the appraisal staff toward consistent estimates and increased customer satisfaction.
Personal Characteristics and Skills
Must enjoy working with people, working around cars and trucks, and working with computer software programs. Needs to manage relationships in a fast paced environment, evaluate performance, and coach individuals. Needs good writing, negotiating, and decision-making skills.
Job Outlook
Insurance is involved in settling most auto collision events. With more vehicles and more miles driven every year, collision losses are inevitable and insurance companies help settle these claims and pay for repairs. Many major insurance companies maintain a workforce dedicated to this position and well-qualified people are always in demand.
Pre-Employment Education and Experience
Math, reading, and computer skills are necessary to understand repairs, research information, and use computer software. A high school education is required with a four-year college degree preferred. At least two years of collision repair estimating experience is preferred. Automotive and collision repair training and training is also required.
Earnings
Depending on location and pay plan, earnings may start between $50,000 and $60,000. Increases are commensurate with experience and performance. Benefits may include insurance, pension plans, and a company vehicle or mileage reimbursement.
Career Path
This is an entry-level management position. It usually is preceded by an estimator or adjuster position and can lead to additional management positions. This position can lead to other related businesses including collision repair, new car dealerships, independent appraisal companies, and educational organizations.
Continuing Education
Internal company education programs. Technical education is available through I-CAR. Certification is available through ASE.
