Description
Leads, manages, and directs the functions of the auto appraiser, re-inspector, and adjuster. Inspects and analyzes results of the auto physical damage claims processes. Uses computers to review claims information and interact with other company computer software. May require travel. Administers human resource policies and procedures within department. Develops plans and leads employees toward objectives considering company guidelines and procedures.
Personal Characteristics and Skills
Must enjoy working with people, working around insurance claims, and working with computer software programs. Needs to manage relationships in a fast paced environment and work under pressure. Must possess an analytical approach to problem solving and communicate effectively with company leadership, employees, customers, vendors, and other industry inter-industry segments. Needs strong organization, time-management, and writing skills. Must be able to develop and maintain ethical business relationships that always reflect the corporate mission.
Job Outlook
Insurance is involved in settling most auto collision events. With more vehicles and more miles driven every year, collision losses are inevitable and insurance companies help settle these claims and pay for repairs. Claims departments are an essential part of the insurance industry with varying degrees of leadership and oversight. Good managers will always be in demand.
Pre-Employment Education and Experience
A four-year college degree is required with advanced degrees preferred. Should have a minimum of five years experience in physical damage appraisal and re-inspection work. Advanced knowledge and understanding of the collision repair business is required. Statistical analysis, human resource applications, and communication/presentation skills are essential. Bilingual skills are a plus.
Earnings
Depending on location, size of operation, and pay plan, earnings may start between $50,000 and $60,000. Experienced managers with proven results may earn much more. Benefits may include insurance, pension plans, and a company vehicle or mileage reimbursement.
Career Path
This is a middle-level-level management position. It usually is preceded by a re-inspector position and can lead to upper management positions. This position can lead to other related businesses including collision repair, new car dealerships, independent appraisal companies, manufacturers, and educational organizations.
