Description

Responsible for entire publication content and layout. Determines publication schedule and lays out production plan for features, technical articles, and editorial comments. Coordinates technical writers and editors for publication deadlines. May perform editing of individual articles for better clarity, precision, or purpose.

 

Personal Characteristics and Skills

Must enjoy research, writing, and working with people in a supervisory role. Must be able to read large volumes of material with a critical eye. Needs excellent communication skills, both oral and written, a large vocabulary, and extensive knowledge of grammar. Must have good patience and editing skills.

 

Job Outlook

The need for technical information increases as new vehicle and material technologies keep advancing. Interesting and concise technical articles are the most valuable and helpful for busy professionals. They must be assembled in a manner that is both appealing and useful to the publication’s readers. People who can supervise and coordinate production of such material will always be in demand.

 

Pre-Employment Education and Experience

Math, reading, and science are helpful to understand technical matters, writing styles, and proper grammar. A college education and prior experience in research and writing is required. Demonstrated skills in supervising people is also required.

 

Earnings

Earnings may start between $50,000 to $60,000 depending on experience and publication size. Increases may depend on publication success as shown by increases in circulation.

 

Career Path

This position would follow experience as a technical writer or editor. It can lead to working with additional publications or publications in other industries.
