Description

Responsible for achievement of association purpose, which could include business benefits, educational opportunities, or political action for association members. Responsible for entire organization, including membership, membership benefits, and promotion. May also manage association meetings, communications, and political efforts.

 

Personal Characteristics and Skills

Must enjoy sales, promotion, and supervising people, including volunteers. Must be able to work with a variety of people who have different skill sets and keep an eye on both association and financial objectives. Must be able to coordinate efforts of local groups along with association staff. Must be able to make good decisions based on fact and business objectives.

 

Job Outlook

The need for organization toward objectives that benefit members increases as businesses develop and require large scale efforts. With more power and focused objectives, a large group of organized businesses can make an impact in ways that individuals cannot. Skilled people that can coordinate and manage these efforts will always be in demand.

 

Pre-Employment Education and Experience

Math, reading, and business management knowledge are necessary to understand both operations and financial concerns of organizations. A college education and prior experience in business management is required.

 

Earnings

Earnings are entirely dependent on the size and objectives of the association. There are local, state-wide, and national associations, each with different purposes and membership sizes. Smaller associations may have part-time or volunteer administrators in the role of executive director.

 

Career Path

This position would follow experience in business, sales, and/or management. Combining and developing business and leadership skills can lead to larger associations and additional organizational objectives.

 

Continuing Education

Association management education can be found through local or on-line college courses. There are also professional organizations for networking and other development opportunities.
