Description
Researches and assembles vehicle labor information and enters relevant data into vehicle files for further processing. Uses manufacturer’s information, outside research companies, and field studies to determine appropriate labor amounts and any overlap considerations. Investigates errors and customer complaints.
Personal Characteristics and Skills
Must have excellent reading, math, and computer skills. Must be detailed oriented and enjoy working with resource materials and databases. Must enjoy working in an office environment with occasional field work.

With vehicle models changing every year and new models being introduced at a record pace, the need for accurate information is higher than ever. This position is important because it helps determine labor charges for insurance settlements and technician’s earnings.
Pre-Employment Education and Experience
A four-year college degree is usually required. This position also requires prior work experience in collision repair. Extensive knowledge of vehicle construction and repair is expected.
Earnings
As an entry-level position in this advanced field, earnings may start between $40,000 and $45,000 per year.
Career Path
This position requires some previous work experience in the collision repair industry. Part editors can advance to this position with extensive training and experience in current repair methods and techniques. This position can be preparation for supervisory or management positions.
Continuing Education
As vehicle technology and repair techniques continue to evolve, on-going training is a must. Continuing education is available through many organizations, including vehicle manufacturers, equipment suppliers, and I-CAR (Inter-Industry Conference on Auto Collision Repair). Several certifications are available, including ASE.
