Description

Responsible for entire publication, including advertising revenue and circulation. Oversees and supervises entire staff, including everyone involved with writing, editing, layout, production, and sales. Promotes publication to increase circulation and revenues while controlling costs and providing a target rate of return for investors.

 

Personal Characteristics and Skills

Must enjoy sales and supervising people. Must be able to work with a variety of people who have different skill sets and keep an eye on financial objectives. Must be able to read large volumes of material with a critical eye. Needs excellent communication skills, both oral and written. Must be able to make good decisions based on fact and business objectives.

 

Job Outlook

The need for technical information increases as new vehicle and material technologies keep advancing. Interesting and concise technical publications are the most valuable and helpful for busy professionals. They must be assembled in a manner that is both appealing and useful to the publication’s readers. People who can manage production and sales of such publications will always be in demand.

 

Pre-Employment Education and Experience

Math, reading, and business knowledge are necessary to understand both production and financial concerns of publications. A college education and prior experience in business management is required.

 

Earnings

Earnings may start between $70,000 to $80,000 depending on experience and publication size. Increases may depend on publication success as shown by increases in circulation.

 

Career Path

This position would follow experience as an editor-in-chief or from management experience in a related industry. It can lead to managing or developing additional publications, possibly in other industries.

 

Continuing Education
