Collision Industry Job Descriptions: sales representative

Description

Responsible for sales of estimating manuals, estimating systems, and related services. Sells to insurance companies, independent appraisal companies, and collision repair businesses. Develops new accounts, services existing accounts, and resolves problems.


Personal Characteristics and Skills

Requires good reading, math, and computer skills. Must enjoy working with people, working with technical products, and sales. Must have good writing, communication, and presentation skills. Must be self-motivated, willing to travel, and comfortable working in an unstructured environment.


Job Outlook

With more precision in estimating and more emphasis on claims processing, the need for efficient estimating will continue to grow. The need to maintain current customers while expanding the market is a sales challenge that will need good qualified people to handle.


Pre-Employment Education and Experience

A post secondary degree is usually required with business management and sales training essential. The ideal candidate will have background experience in collision repair estimating, insurance claims, or, preferably, both.


Earnings

This is a sales position, based heavily on commission and starting salaries from $50,000 can be expected. Increased earnings follow increased abilities.


Career Path

This position usually follows from collision repair shop and/or insurance claims experience. There can be opportunities for advancement to management positions.


Continuing Education

Internal company education programs for product knowledge and sales expectations. Advanced sales training can be found in local or on-line colleges and independent seminars. Continuing technical education is available through outside organizations, including I-CAR (Inter-Industry Conference on Auto Collision Repair). Certifications are available through ASE.
