Collision Industry Job Descriptions: technical Specialist

Description

Assists with technical aspects of curriculum development. Designs and produces instructional props and training simulators appropriate to classroom instruction. Provides technical support and acts as talent for video and photography of repair procedures and processes. Assists in program development, makes classroom preparations, and provides instruction for vehicle, equipment, and product specific training programs as needed.

 

Personal Characteristics and Skills

Must enjoy working around cars and trucks, be mechanically inclined, and enjoy researching repair procedures. Have self-confidence, pride in work, and good hand-eye coordination. Be physically fit to lift, bend, and work with heavy vehicle components, have patience, and work as a team player.

 

Job Outlook

The need of technical expertise for curriculum development will increase as new technologies keep advancing. This is an important part of educating the current and future workforce and good, qualified people will always be in demand.

 

Pre-Employment Education and Experience

Math, reading, and science are necessary to understand vehicle systems, manufacturer’s procedures, and diagnostics. A high school education is required with post-secondary education in collision repair recommended. At least five years experience working as a collision repair technician is required and teaching experience is a plus.

 

Earnings

Earnings generally start between $35,000 to $45,000 and increases follow additional skills and abilities development.

 

Career Path

This position requires 5 years of experience in collision repair work. This position could lead to instructor, instructional designer, and management.

 

Continuing Education

As vehicle technology and repair techniques continue to evolve, on-going training is a must. Continuing education is available through many organizations, including vehicle manufacturers, equipment suppliers, and I-CAR (Inter-Industry Conference on Auto Collision Repair). Several certifications are available, including ASE.
