Description
Responsible for instructing users in the proper installation and use of products. Trains new users, usually at their location, and may train internal staff. Stays current with new software releases, database issues, and computer hardware.
Personal Characteristics and Skills
Requires good reading, math, science, and computer skills. Must enjoy working with people, and be comfortable working in collision shops, insurance companies, and internal offices. Must have excellent communication and presentation skills. Must be goal-oriented, self-motivated, and willing to keep learning.
Job Outlook
Dependent on expanding products, markets, and sales, new product training is a continual need. Refresher courses and training follow up is need for continuous customer satisfaction. Well-qualified and effective trainers will always be in demand.
Pre-Employment Education and Experience
A college degree is required. Experience in teaching, presenting, and instructional development is a plus. Prior experience in collision repair or insurance claims is recommended. Customer service representatives could also be good candidates.
Earnings
This is a higher technical position, requiring extensive experience and knowledge, and starting salaries from $45,000 to $60,000 are common. Increased earnings follow increased abilities.
Career Path
This position usually follows from repair shop estimating, insurance estimating, or in-house customer service experience. There can opportunities for advancement to supervisory or management positions.
Continuing Education
Internal company education programs for product knowledge and service expectations. Advanced presentation skills training can be found in local or on-line colleges and independent seminars. Continuing technical education is available through outside organizations, including I-CAR (Inter-Industry Conference on Auto Collision Repair). Certifications are available through ASE.
