Collision Industry Job Descriptions: Technical Writer

Description

Researches and writes about technical topics for industry magazines, associations, and websites. May interview industry experts, observe live work or repair techniques, and read factory procedure manuals as background. Develops and writes articles using appropriate style, grammar, and spelling.

 

Personal Characteristics and Skills

Must enjoy research and writing. Must be self-motivated and enjoy working alone. Needs excellent communication skills, both oral and written, and a large vocabulary. Must have good patience and editing skills.

 

Job Outlook

The need for technical information increases as new vehicle and material technologies keep advancing. Interesting and concise technical articles are the most helpful for busy professionals. Writers who can communicate good, relevant information in an effective manner will always be in demand.

 

Pre-Employment Education and Experience

Math, reading, and science are necessary to understand vehicle systems, manufacturer’s procedures, and repair technologies. A college education is required with experience in collision repair recommended. Prior experience in research and writing is a plus.

 

Earnings

Earnings may start between $30,000 to $35,000 for new writers and increase with proven ability and additional areas of expertise.

 

Career Path

This position can be an entry-level start to a career in technical writing. It can lead to writing opportunities in related industries. Future careers may be textbook writing or instructional design. Good writers can also move into editing or publishing.
