Description

Contacts current and potential customers to sell parts and make sure your business is meeting their needs. Travels in market area to customer locations, including repair shops, fleet operations, and municipal accounts. Creates credit profiles, reviews invoices, and may assist with account receivables.

 

Personal Characteristics and Skills

Must enjoy working with people, numbers, and computers in a sales environment. Must have good communication and phone skills. Requires working outside an office and in an unstructured environment. Must be a self-starter to develop new business accounts.

 

Job Outlook

Strong and growing sales are important to a successful business and this position is critical toward that goal. A well-qualified competent person will always be in demand.

 

Pre-Employment Education and Experience

High school diploma or equivalent is required with advanced education recommended. Prior experience in the parts business is important. Prior experience in outside sales is recommended.

 

Earnings

Depending on location and size of business, earnings may start between $35,000 and $45,000 with increases dependent on performance. Benefits may include insurance, pension plans, and holidays.

 

Career Path

This position can result from a counter sales position or a wholesale parts position. This position can lead to larger sales responsibilities or management positions.

 

Continuing Education

Sales and computer training are available through local seminars or schools. Technical training for automotive repair is available through I-CAR, vehicle manufacturers, and supply companies.
