Description
Works in a vehicle manufacturer’s parts operation and is responsible for instructing manufacturing, distribution, and dealership personnel. Teaches all aspects of parts supply and distribution, including part availability, ordering, and return. Also assists with new replacement part introductions and marketing information. May instruct in a live or remote classroom.
Personal Characteristics and Skills
Requires good reading, math, science, and computer skills. Must enjoy working with people and have excellent communication and presentation skills. Must be goal-oriented, self-motivated, and willing to keep learning.
Job Outlook
Dependent on expanding products, markets, and sales, new product training can be a continual need. Refresher courses and training follow up is also a constant need. Well-qualified and effective trainers will always be in demand.
Pre-Employment Education and Experience
A college degree is required. Experience in teaching, presenting, and instructional development is a plus. Prior experience in automotive repair is recommended.
Earnings
This is a higher level technical position, requiring extensive experience and knowledge, and starting salaries from $45,000 to $60,000 are common. Increased earnings follow increased abilities.
Career Path
This position usually follows from instructing technical automotive repair, equipment, or materials. There can opportunities for advancement to instructional design or management positions.
Continuing Education
Internal company education programs for product knowledge and service expectations. Advanced presentation skills training can be found in local or on-line colleges and independent seminars. Continuing technical education is available through outside organizations, including I-CAR (Inter-Industry Conference on Auto Collision Repair). Certifications are available through ASE.
