Description
Repairs or replaces windshields and other automotive glass. Usually travels in company truck with materials and equipment to work on vehicle at owner’s or repair shop’s location. Removes, repairs, and installs glass according to manufacturer’s and other safety procedures. May have contact with vehicle owner.
Personal Characteristics and Skills
Must enjoy working on cars and trucks in different locations and under different conditions, including inclement weather. Must be physically fit to lift, bend, and carry heavy materials. Must have patience, good mechanical aptitude, and enjoy talking to customers. Must have good reading skills and be able to locate, understand, and apply procedures to the wide variety of glass installations encountered. Must be able to work with little direct supervision.
Job Outlook
With an increasing number of vehicles on the road every year and with glass replacement becoming a highly specialized skill, there will be increasing demand for this position.
Pre-Employment Education and Experience
High school diploma or equivalent is required with advanced education recommended. Prior automotive repair experience is preferred.
Earnings
Depending on location and size of business, earnings may start between $25,000 and $30,000. Benefits may include insurance, pension plans, and holidays.
Career Path
This can be an entry-level position, although some automotive background is helpful. This position can lead to a position above entry-level technician for collision repair, as well as supervisory, management, or sales positions in the glass replacement business.
Continuing Education
Technical training is available through I-CAR, glass manufacturers, and supply companies. Certification is available through the National Glass Association and adhesive suppliers.
