Collision Industry Job Descriptions: Information Technology Specialist

Description

Maintains and updates computer systems, work stations, and servers. Ensures all systems perform reliably and backup systems work when needed. May develop or maintain local website or intranet. Trains new computer applications and new personnel.

 

Personal Characteristics and Skills

Must enjoy working with computer hardware and software. Requires working in an office environment, paying close attention to detail, and having patience. Must be able to work under pressure and occasionally after regular work hours.

 

Job Outlook

Computers, computer systems, and networks are becoming an increasingly essential part of business. As reliance on computers keeps increasing for sales, rentals, accounting, websites, and internet needs, this position becomes vital. With computer use and necessity increasing, opportunities keep expanding. This position will remain in high demand.

 

Pre-Employment Education and Experience

Reading, math, and computer skills are essential. A high school education is required with post-secondary education a plus. Network, operating system, and data base certification is recommended. Experience with electronic communication systems is important.

Depending on the size of the business’ computer systems, earnings can be expected to start between $35,000 to $40,000 and increase according to experience and changing technologies.

 

Career Path

Advancement would include larger computer systems and larger businesses. Future positions could include the insurance, manufacturer, and distributor industries. Another path could be software development for many of the industry suppliers. Many IT Specialists operate as independent consultants, managing computer systems in many different businesses.
