Collision Industry Job Descriptions: Oil Change Technician

Description

Changes oil and oil filters in a fast-paced, high-volume specialty business. May also perform minor service work, including air filter and headlamp replacements. Uses hand tools and power equipment to remove and replace engine oil and service fluid levels.

 

Personal Characteristics and Skills

Must enjoy working on cars and trucks, be mechanically inclined, and have good hand-eye coordination. Be physically fit to lift, bend, and work with heavy vehicle components, have patience; and be willing to work as a team player.

 

Job Outlook

As vehicle population and miles driven increase every year, the need for fast quality oil change service will continue to grow. Technicians to staff this growing service will stay in demand.

 

Pre-Employment Education and Experience

Math, reading, and science are necessary to understand vehicle systems and manufacturer’s procedures. A high school education is expected with automotive training recommended.
