Collision Industry Job Descriptions: Assembly Line Worker

Description

Assembles new parts on new cars and trucks as they are built. May move parts from storage, manage inventory levels, and check quality. Generally union jobs, specific duties are defined in a labor contract.


Personal Characteristics and Skills

Requires some reading and math skills. Must be physically fit and able to lift heavy loads. Must enjoy repetitive physical tasks and be able to work in teams effectively.


Job Outlook

Dependent on world-wide automotive sales, demand is always present for new cars and trucks. People are needed to build those new cars and trucks.


Pre-Employment Education and Experience

A high school education is encouraged. A proven record of excellent work habits is important.


Earnings

Positions from entry-level to senior workers in a vehicle manufacturing plant are spelled out in union contracts and vary depending on company, contract, and experience.


Career Path

This position may come from support or maintenance positions in the factory. With a good work record assembler would be the next level. From this position, supervisory and management positions would be possible.


Continuing Education

Post-secondary education through local colleges can provide additional opportunities. Automotive training can lead to even more.
