Collision Industry Job Descriptions: Automotive Engineer

Description

Engineers design automotive parts and systems to meet new vehicle specifications as designed. Responsible for selecting materials, designing function, and developing manufacturing processes to produce and install the part correctly. Coordinates needs from many departments, including manufacturing, material procurement, and accounting. Balances priorities of function, weight, and cost.


Personal Characteristics and Skills

Requires excellent reading, math, science, and computer skills. Must enjoy working with technical issues, design specs, and statistical reports. Must have excellent writing, communication, and research skills. Must be able to analyze data and present findings.


Job Outlook

As manufacturers have increased function and complexity of new cars and trucks, designing all the needed parts and systems is a constant challenge. Good automotive engineers will always be in demand.


Pre-Employment Education and Experience

College education required with engineering degree. Advanced degrees recommended. In-depth understanding of materials, design, and testing is essential. Minimum 5 years of related engineering experience are required.


Earnings

This is a highly specialized position, requiring extensive experience and knowledge, and starting salaries from $60,000 to $70,000 are common.


Career Path

This position usually follows from a less complex engineering position. There can be opportunities for advancement to engineering management positions.
