Collision Industry Job Descriptions: Customer Service Representative

Description

Works in a supply store and is responsible for taking customer orders, providing professional product knowledge and service, and follow up on all sales. Uses catalogs and supply books, computers, and in-store displays to help customers purchase everything they need. Handles invoices, billing, and reports. Follows up on back orders, helps with inventory stock, and stays current on product offerings.

 

Personal Characteristics and Skills

Must enjoy working with people, be comfortable working in a sales environment, and have good communication skills. Must possess an analytical approach to problem solving. Must be able to develop and maintain ethical business relationships.

 

Job Outlook

With more vehicles and more miles driven every year, collision losses are inevitable and their repair requires specialized equipment, tools, and materials. Every collision repair business needs a reliable source of quality materials, tools, and equipment, as well as people to ensure the right product gets to the right place at the right time. A quality store will employ enough customer service representatives to properly address all customers’ needs.

 

Pre-Employment Education and Experience

A high school education is preferred with post-secondary education recommended. Some experience in the automotive or collision repair industries is helpful. Bilingual skills are a plus.

 

Earnings

Depending on size of market and store, earnings may start between $20,000 and $30,000 with a well-run store in a growing market expecting even greater earnings.

 

Career Path

This is an entry-level sales position. Sales skills can easily transfer to other positions in collision repair businesses, new car dealerships, paint manufacturers, and vehicle manufacturers.

 

Continuing Education

Internal company and manufacturer education programs for advancement or to meet state and local licensing requirements. Outside training through organizations including I-CAR and AMI.
