Collision Industry Job Descriptions: Dealer Representative

Description

Provides a direct link between vehicle manufacturers and their sales outlets. Responsible for connection with new car dealers in a geographic area for new car sales, warranty service, or parts sales. Helps dealership personnel with product information, problem resolution, and promotions.


Personal Characteristics and Skills

Requires good reading, math, and computer skills. Must enjoy working with people, working with technical products, and sales. Must have good writing, communication, and presentation skills. Must be self-motivated and comfortable working in an unstructured environment.


Job Outlook

With new vehicle demand increasing and competition keeping pressure on sales, manufacturers and new car dealers need to work together to increase sales, service quality, and customer satisfaction. The dealer representative is a critical link to make that happen. Good qualified people are always in demand for this position.


Pre-Employment Education and Experience

A four-year college degree is required. Experience in automotive sales and service is also required. Proven customer service skills are essential.


Earnings

This is an advanced sales position, requiring extensive experience and knowledge, and starting salaries from $70,000 to $80,000 could be expected. Increased earnings follow increased abilities and proven success.


Career Path

This position usually follows from new vehicle experience in retail, wholesale, and manufacturer positions. There can be opportunities for advancement to management positions. This experience could also lead toward ownership of a new car dealership.
