Collision Industry Job Descriptions: Design Engineer

Description

Responsible for design and modifications to existing products, design and implementation of new products, and change orders in response to field issues. Establishes design requirements, helps resolve production and field problems, and stays involved with testing.

 

Personal Characteristics and Skills

Requires excellent reading, math, science, and computer skills. Must enjoy working in a fast-paced manufacturing environment, working with technical products, and solving problems. Must have good writing, communication, and presentation skills. Must be self-motivated and comfortable working with others.

 

Job Outlook

In response to new vehicle technologies, parts, products, tools, and fixtures need design changes. These must be done efficiently, effectively, and tested thoroughly. This position is critical for a manufacturer to stay current and competitive in the marketplace.

 

Pre-Employment Education and Experience

High school or equivalent diploma plus 5 years manufacturing experience. A degree in engineering and design is preferred. Advanced degrees are recommended.

 

Earnings

This is a high-level technical position, requiring extensive experience and knowledge, and starting salaries from $50,000 to $60,000 are common.

 

Career Path

This position usually follows extensive manufacturing experience and education, especially after working with design, installation, and maintenance of parts and tools. From here, there may opportunities in higher engineering positions and manufacturing operations.

 

Continuing Education

Internal company, manufacturer, and engineering education programs for advancement or to meet state and local licensing requirements. Business management education available through local or on-line colleges.
