Collision Industry Job Descriptions: Plant Manager

Description

Responsible for the performance of one or more departments in a new car or truck manufacturing plant, including material handling, welding, painting, power train assembly, and interior assembly. Manages inventory, supervisors, and maintenance. Insures compliance with work rules and production goals. Maintains a clean, safe, and efficient work environment. Maintains a positive working relationship with employees.


Personal Characteristics and Skills

Requires excellent reading, math, and computer skills. Must enjoy working with people, be comfortable in a leadership role, and working in a production environment. Must have good communication skills and be able to read, comprehend, and write clear comprehensive reports.


Job Outlook

As the high demand for new cars and trucks continues, factories will continue to build them and that takes many people. Management is an important part of the process to maintain production schedules. Good managers will always be in demand.


Pre-Employment Education and Experience

A college degree is required with advanced education recommended. Should have three to five years of experience in supervisory positions and some experience in manufacturing. Bilingual skills are a plus.


Earnings

Depending on company, location, responsibility, earnings may start between $70,000 and $80,000 with increases dependent on performance.


Career Path

This position may be filled from a lower management position or from manufacturing management experience in another industry. Advancement can include additional responsibilities up to managing the entire manufacturing plant.


Continuing Education

Internal company education programs for internal advancement and local colleges for additional business or management training.
