Description
With manufacturing assembly lines becoming more automated, robotic equipment must be in perfect operating condition at all times. This position maintains equipment, diagnoses and repairs problems, and upgrades software as needed for robotic equipment including assemblers and welders. Uses electronic diagnostic tools to find problems, then uses hand tools and power tools to replace or repair parts as needed.
Personal Characteristics and Skills
Must enjoy working on mechanical equipment and electronic controls, be mechanically inclined, and find satisfaction in repairs. Have self-confidence, pride in work, and good hand-eye coordination. Be physically fit to lift, bend, and work with heavy equipment, have patience; and be willing to constantly learn. Be willing to work as a team player and research repair information as needed. Enjoy constant challenges.
Job Outlook
As new vehicle production becomes more automated, technicians will be needed to keep them operating as designed. This position becomes critical for keeping the manufacturing line operating and people that can maintain this robotic equipment will be in high demand.
Pre-Employment Education and Experience
Math, reading, and science are necessary to understand the mechanics and electronics of robotic equipment. A high school education is required with experience in electrical, electronic, and mechanical maintenance fields expected. Post-secondary education is a plus and continuing education can be expected throughout your career.
Earnings
Earnings generally start between $45,000 to $55,000. As a union position, this is dependent on local contracts. Future earnings depend on new contracts and seniority, or length of time on the job.
Career Path
Requires 3-4 years of experience in related maintenance and repairs. Future careers may include management, equipment service or sales, and technical training.
Continuing Education
On-going training is a must, especially with the latest technology needed for the assembly line. Most training will be by the equipment manufacturer for specific updates. Continuing general education is available through local post-secondary schools or colleges.
