Collision Industry Job Descriptions: Sales Manager

Description

Directs the activities of a sales team. Responsible for overall sales and service of automotive refinish products in a defined area. Supports sales representatives to achieve objectives and coordinates technical personnel to solve local problems.

 

Personal Characteristics and Skills

Requires good reading, math, science, and computer skills. Must enjoy working with people, working with technical products, and sales. Must have good writing, communication, and presentation skills. Must be self-motivated and comfortable working in an unstructured environment.

 

Job Outlook

With more vehicles and more miles driven every year, collision losses are inevitable and their repair requires specialized equipment, tools, and materials. Every collision repair business needs a reliable source of quality materials with many competing companies vying for the business. Sales representatives need to be supported, trained, and motivated by an effective manager.

 

Pre-Employment Education and Experience

A degree in Automotive Technology or Business Management and 5-6 years of related technical and sales experience are required. Understanding of refinish products and retail business operations are needed. Proven product sales and customer service skills are essential.

 

Earnings

This is a high-level sales position, requiring extensive experience and knowledge, and starting salaries from $60,000 to $70,000 are common.

 

Career Path

This position usually follows from experience and success in sales positions. There can be opportunities for advancement to higher-level management positions. This experience could also lead toward management positions with vehicle manufacturers.

 

Continuing Education
