Collision Industry Job Descriptions: Sales Representative – Outside

Description

Represents local supplier store (jobber) to collision repair businesses in order to supply them with needed equipment, tools, and materials including paint products. Responsible for maintaining current customers, developing new customers, and achieving sales targets. Travels to customer shops, builds relationships, and helps solve problems. Works with jobber, shop, and factory personnel to make sure products are building customer satisfaction.

 

Personal Characteristics and Skills

Must enjoy working with people, working with different shops, and selling. Must be self-motivated and have good communication skills. Must possess an analytical approach to problem solving. Must be able to develop and maintain ethical business relationships.

 

Job Outlook

With more vehicles and more miles driven every year, collision losses are inevitable and their repair requires specialized equipment, tools, and materials. Every collision repair business needs a reliable source of quality materials and every local jobber needs representatives to build and maintain customers.

 

Pre-Employment Education and Experience

A high school education is required with a four-year college degree recommended. Business management or sales education is encouraged. Should have three to five years of experience in collision repair or distributor sales. Bilingual skills are a plus.

 

Earnings

Depending on sales territory and pay plan, earnings may start between $30,000 and $40,000. Experienced sales representatives with proven results may earn much more. Benefits may include insurance, pension plans, and a company vehicle or mileage reimbursement.

 

Career Path

This sales position can lead to additional territory, product, or supervisory responsibilities. This position can lead to sales or management positions in other related businesses including collision repair, new car dealerships, paint manufacturers, and educational organizations.

 

Continuing Education

Internal company and manufacturer education programs for advancement or to meet state and local licensing requirements. Outside training through organizations including I-CAR and AMI.
